Bipolar disorder
Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression, is a mental health disorder involving extreme mood swings from emotional highs, or mania, to emotional lows, or depression. While the term “bipolar disorder” is well-known, it is an umbrella term covering three types of the disorder.
Bipolar I Disorder: This includes periods of mania and depression lasting for at least one week. These episodes are so severe that they affect sleep and daily functioning. If your teen or young adult has bipolar I disorder, their episodes most often occur immediately before or after a depressive episode lasting two weeks or more.
Bipolar II Disorder: Like bipolar I disorder, bipolar II includes periods of mania and severe depression. However, these episodes tend to be less intense.
Cyclothymic Disorder: This type of bipolar disorder in teens and young adults includes numerous depressive and manic symptoms, but not to the extent of bipolar I or bipolar II.
